Bronx Gas Station Worker Killed After Week On Job

A 28-year-old gas station attendant who co-workers say was on the job for only a week was shot dead in the Bronx during what police say was an attempted robbery Tuesday night.

Police responded to a 911 call reporting a man shot near East 182 Street and Southern Boulevard shortly before 10 p.m. and found the man with several gunshot wounds to the torso.

He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He has been identified as Lamin Sellah.

Robert Calcano, one of the victim's co-workers, said multiple customers were at the gas station at the time of the shooting. Several workers and three drivers who were at the pumps witnessed the incident, Calcano said.

With tears in his eyes, he described Sellah as "the nicest guy" and said he was from Africa.

Police say two suspects in their 20s intended to rob the gas station. One was the lookout; the other was the shooter. It's not clear why Sellah was shot.

The alleged would-be robbers apparently fled without stealing anything. Nothing was stolen from the gas station's cash register. The victim still had money in his pockets.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
