Ulster County Sheriff Struck By Vehicle

Saugerties – Police don’t know why a 60-year-old Saugerties man, who was driving a Honda FIT southbound on Route 9W in Saugerties, ran off the road Monday afternoon and struck a pickup truck parked off the road on a field.

Ulster County Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum, who owns the pickup and had been mowing the field, was standing by his vehicle when the driver, identified as Robert Michaue, struck it, pushing his truck into the sheriff, throwing him to the ground.

Van Blarcum, Michaue and a passenger in Michaue’s vehicle, Katharine Grapes, 60, were all treated at the scene and taken to Kingston Hospital where they remained, all with non-life threatening injuries, said Undersheriff Frank Faluotico, Jr. Van Blarcum is listed in stable condition as of late Tuesday afternoon.

Saugerties Police were assisted at the scene by the State Police, Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, Diaz Ambulance and the Malden West Camp Fire Department.
