2 Hurt As Deer Collides With Car On Route 45

RAMAPO - A Bronx man suffered serious injuries when his car collided with a deer on Route 45, propelling the 180-pound, antlered buck through the windshield and into the vehicle's back seat, Ramapo police said Thursday.

Elmer Adilio, 30, the driver, is listed in critical condition in Nyack Hospital with head and body injuries, police said.


His passenger, Emerita Najarro, 36, of the Bronx, suffered non-life threatening injuries to her face, neck and chest, police said. She was considered stable and may have been treated and released from the hospital, police said.

The front end of Adilio's 2010 Toyota Camery hit the buck at 10:22 p.m. Wednesday near Rovitz Place, outside Spring Valley.

As the buck crashed through the windshield, Adilio veered the southbound car off Route 45 into a utility pole, snapping the pole in half, said Detective Lt. Mark Emma, who is trained in accident reconstruction.

"We don't know if his injuries came from the impact of hitting the pole or from the deer itself," Emma said. "He could have been hit by a hard part of the deer, the hoofs."

Investigators hope to speak with doctors about Adilio's injuries. Rockland Paramedic Services treated Adilio and Najarro at the scene before transported them to the hospital.

Both were wearing seat belts, Emma said.
